Bhootnii movie review (X/@sidkannan, @Ravan_x1210)

The Bhootnii, a sidle effort by Sidhaant Sachdev to create a horror-comedy-film with romance and drama incorporated, turns out to be a cacophonous mix. The film is about a ghost named Mohabbat (Mouni Roy) who lives in a Virgin Tree in the campus of a college and is revered by the students for finding true love. But the ghost has a dark past and takes a student's soul on every Holika Dahan Day.

A ghostbuster to the rescue

The college administration, concerned about their reputation, appoint a ghostbuster called Baba (Sanjay Dutt) to solve the mystery. Baba comes equipped with his advanced gadgetry, but his work is hampered by the ghost's paranormal abilities. In the meantime, a student called Shantanu (Sunny Singh) is saved by Mohabbat when he's looking for true love, and the two fall into a complicated relationship.

A complicated love triangle

As Shantanu begins to fall for another student named Ananya, Mohabbat becomes insecure and begins to create trouble. The ghost's actions are a blend of horror and comedy, but the attempts at humor in the film fail. The climax of the movie discloses Mohabbat's sinister past, but it is too little, too late to save the movie.

Poor performances

The performances of the actors in the movie are not satisfying. Mouni Roy's best effort as the spiritual figure is not well supported by the rest of the cast, though. Sanjay Dutt revisits his act as Munna Bhai but it is not amusing anymore. The supporting ensemble, such as Aasif Khan and BeYouNick, do their utmost, but nothing much is there for them in the script.

A messy production

The production values of the film are dubious, with the college campus resembling an upmarket boutique hotel. The events of the film are implausible, and the comedy is awkward. The film's effort to combine horror and comedy is commendable, but it becomes a hodgepodge.

'Bhootnii' is a disappointment

The Bhootnii is a disappointment that fails to live up to its threat of comedy and horror. The story is muddled, the acting is subpar, and the production values are suspect. Even die-hard Sanjay Dutt and Mouni Roy fans may end up dozing at the too-familiar clichés and the predictable turns of plot.
